Janiszewski v. Belmont Career Ctr.

In the case of Janiszewski v. Belmont Career Ctr., 2017-Ohio-855, a former employee sued a vocational school district board of education and her supervisors following the non-renewal of her teaching contract. The employee alleged numerous claims including hostile work environment gender discrimination, disability discrimination, defamation, and fraud. McGown & Markling successfully obtained summary judgment in favor of all defendants on all claims and an appellate decision in favor of all defendants. McGown & Markling was also successful in arguing that the Ohio Supreme Court should decline to hear the employee’s appeal.

What makes this case particularly important is the ruling that statements made during executive sessions are privileged and protected from liability in defamation cases.
